The Runner Section:
Only Stock 6 MONTHS OR UNDER will be sold in the Runner Section and they will be sold after the Calf Sale.
Calves must be at least 10 days of age before they can be sold and UNDER 6 weeks of age.

If the number drawn is above half the number of pens entered, we go up to the last pen in the draw, then start at pen 1 and up to the number drawn.
Sheep Sellers All sheep including lambs presented for sale must be identified with a full set of EID tags, i.e. one conventional tag in the sheep’s left ear and a corresponding electronic tag placed in the sheep’s right ear. All sheep moved to and from a livestock mart must also be accompanied by a newly issued dispatch document containing a barcoded document serial number.

Very big sale today with almost 1,100 on offer which included 450 runners. Overall trade very similar to last week in all categories. The shippers not as active today as a number of stock didn’t get away last week and prospects not great for this week either. More farmers about today and lighter calves of 300kgs to 350kgs meet a good trade with farmers willing to give up to €850 to €900 for these. Very few suckler cows on offer today and pairs made to €1,900. Runner heifers made to €730 and bulls made to €960. Lambs generally made around €2/kg. Cull ewes a more mixed trade also.

Bigger sale in Kilrush today, especially in the bullock and cull cow sections. Trade for the cows was strong. Quite a number of bullocks over 30 months and short of flesh. The ’18 born stores of all breeds were a fine trade. The overage cattle still proving to be a tough trade. Some very good cull cows available and these meet very good demand as these were well fleshed.

Ennis Mart Shorthorn Society Sale

Ennis Mart Saturday 5th October 2019
The annual sale of Pedigree Shorthorns on behalf of the Shannonside Shorthorn Breeders Club proved a great success despite the downturn in the beef sector, with in-calf heifers topping out at €2,275. The sale for weanling hiefers proved exceptionally strong with these topping out at €2,000 and several lots making well in excess of €1,000. However, it must be said that there was some lovely quality lots on offer. The lighter and younger heifers made €650 to €900. The average price was up €80 on the same sale 12 months previous.

Very big sale today with almost 1,200 head on offer and again this consisted of 400 runners. Quality getting variable in the weanling rings but quality lots still attracted very good interest. The plainer lighter stock are that bit harder work. The heifer trade was marginally better which was dominated by farmers. Again in the bull ring it was a mix of farmers and shippers but again shippers not as active as a few weeks back. Runner heifers made to €705 and runner bulls hit to €930. Suckler pairs made to €1,910. Sheep trade similar to last week with lambs averaging €1.90/kg and cull ewes made €43 to €102.

Big sale in Kilrush today, which consisted of cull cows, weanlings, heifers and bullocks. Big entry of cull cows today with most of these dairy culls. Friesian culls made 70c/kg to €1.37/kg. Trade was dominated by farmers and the nice quality bull weanlings were sought after. Trade for plainer stock in all categories getting pretty tough.

Numbers smaller than last week but still 1,070 lots on offer. Quality getting quite variable but again quality lots were an exceptional trade. Heifers slightly tougher on the week. The shippers were quiet today in the bull ring also and more farmers about. The best trade in the bulls was the top quality charolais and limousins in the 320kg to 360kg bracket at the top end and also nice store calves in the 230kg to 260kg bracket. Again another large entry of runners and heifer runners hit €660 and bulls hit €855. A selection of in-calf heifers made €1,120 to €1,450. Pairs in the suckler ring made to €1,520. The sheep trade was firm with a handful of wholesaler lambs making to €120 but factory lambs generally making €90 to €97. Cull ewes made €66 to €94.

Big sale again in Kilrush with almost 400 head on offer. There was a large entry of bullocks. It was mostly traditional breeds in the bullock and heifer sections but predominantly dairy type cull cows and numbers in this section not as large as anticipated. Many farmers and specialized feeders still finding it very hard to get cattle killed as there seems to be a huge backlog still in the system. The average and poorer quality stock are a tough trade overall especially heifers. There were some lovely quality whitehead bullocks many of which would grade ‘R’.

Numbers back quite a bit today with 800 on offer. Quality is very variable at the moment but the good quality lots are still holding a very good trade. Heifer trade improved today by €20 to €30 in most cases as a few more farmers about in this ring. Bit more activity from the shippers in the bull ring but these are also quite price conscious and they’re back €50 on what they were spending a month ago. Runner numbers back today also as it seems farmers are holding some stock in anticipation of a price rise. Runner heifers made to €660 and bulls to €840. In-calf suckler stock made to €1,500. Bulls over 420kgs a tough trade. A small entry of calves meet a serious trade with an Angus Bull 12 days old making €250 and a Charolais calf hit €550. Sheep trade a shade sharper with more wholesale activity and sheep generally making €2/kg. Cull ewes made €84 to €110.

Very good mix of stock in Kilrush today with a strong entry of weanlings and these were mostly Continentals. The cull cows on offer were predominantly Friesian cows, many of which were purchased in the Springtime to cover the 7th month retention period. The bullocks and aged heifers were all traditional breeds. Trade was reasonable all round.

Trade was good overall and the shorthorn heifers proved a strong trade despite quality being quite variable. Generally shorthorn heifer weanlings made €500 to €1,040. Shorthorn bull weanlings a tough trade.

Numbers smaller today and quality getting very mixed in all rings. Quality lots holding a very fine trade but some of the plainer lots are proving difficult to shift. Runner heifers hit to €670 and Runner bulls to €855. Very mixed run of suckler stock on offer and the top call here was €1,500 for pairs. Sheep a firm trade on the week with butcher type lambs making to €115 and factory type lambs making €90 to €100. Cull ewes meet a very strong trade and made to a high of €117 with a group of 15 making €115.
