The Runner Section:
Only Stock 6 MONTHS OR UNDER will be sold in the Runner Section and they will be sold after the Calf Sale.
Calves must be at least 10 days of age before they can be sold and UNDER 6 weeks of age.

If the number drawn is above half the number of pens entered, we go up to the last pen in the draw, then start at pen 1 and up to the number drawn.
Sheep Sellers All sheep including lambs presented for sale must be identified with a full set of EID tags, i.e. one conventional tag in the sheep’s left ear and a corresponding electronic tag placed in the sheep’s right ear. All sheep moved to and from a livestock mart must also be accompanied by a newly issued dispatch document containing a barcoded document serial number.

Numbers back in the bull and heifer weanling rings but calf numbers have increased by 50% on the week. Trade in the bull ring similar and heifers improved by €20 to €30. Trade for the better calves also improved today by €10 to €20 per head but poor calves a tough trade as usual. Pairs in the suckler ring reached €2,250 today. Only a single dairy cow on offer, a 2nd calver and made €1,380. Calves need to be at least 3 weeks old and well fed to attract interest. Hoggets a steady trade on the week and a lot of 8 at 61kgs made €148 and most lots in the €135 to €142 bracket. Cull ewes made €100 to €159.

Good increase in numbers in Kilrush today, likewise in the calf section. Good demand for quality calves today and more farmers about and whitehead bull calves made to €282 and whitehead heifer calves made to €178. Friesian bull calves made to €102 for 3 week old calves but light young calves making €10 to €50. Some very good cull cows on offer today and a 50/50 mix of Friesian and Continental breeds. A great trade for some outlying stores and quite a number of lovely Hereford cattle on offer both 2 year olds and yearlings.

Just over 800 on offer with a 98% clearance. Trade improved all round and forward type stock in great demand. Light stores were scarce. Some great cull cows on offer today. Generally prices improved €20 to €30 on the week with plenty customers for all categories of stock today. A good entry of aged bulls again today and these averaged €1.77 per kg. A good number of lots in the cull cow ring exceed €2 per kg.

Mixed Breed Bull Sale Monday 9th March 2020
Our first mixed breed bull sale for 2020 took place on Monday the 9th of March with a good entry. Charolais bulls meet good demand and a fair clearance as did the Limousins as these were purchased by Suckler farmers. A handful of Herefords sold and a few Aberdeen Angus but dairy farmers slower to buy due to the weather currently prevailing. Charolais sold to an average of €2,252 and Limousins to an average of €2,147. Charolais ranged from €1,600 to €2,820 and Limousins from €1,520 to €2,600. Hereford bulls ranged from €1,400 to €1,900 and Aberdeen Angus from €1,000 to €1,820.

Big sale today with over 1,100 on offer which included 300 calves. The quality in the bull ring was more variable today and the top quality lots were a great trade but lesser lots that bit easier on the week. Heifer trade very strong with a standout price of €1,550 for a 360kg roan coloured heifer. Calves overall a good trade with the exception of a few poor Friesians that made €5 to €25. General run of Friesian bull calves made €40 to €80 with a strong type making €100 to €120. Continental bull calves made to €470. Hereford bulls made to €350. Again suckler stock a great trade and pairs made to €2,620. In-calf lots made to €1,570. More dairy stock today and these made €1,260 to €1,400. Hoggets again a very strong trade and a lot of 8 at 56kgs made €151. Lots generally making €130 to €145. Cull ewes topped out at €160. Ewes with lambs at foot made to €190.

Big sale in Kilrush today with almost 500 on offer, which included 140 calves. Trade for calves ok but nobody wanted very poor calves or JEX calves at any price. Friesian bull calves made €5 to €80. Whitehead bulls €180 to €350 and heifers made €80 to €180. A strong entry of cull cows again, good numbers of Friesians. A large entry of traditional breeds in the bullock and heifer rings, meet a very steady trade. The continuous bad weather is holding off some men buying stock.

Our normal Tuesday sale was held today due to St Patricks Day and it was run operating under the new protocol as advised by the authorities where numbers were limited in all sales rings and numbers kept to approximately 70 people at any time in each ring. Clare Marts appreciates the co-operation of customers in implementing the necessary changes. Trade was very satisfactory all round, with bull weanlings improved but heifer weanlings a shade back from the very high trade of last week. Calves improved today but farmers are realising that calves have to be at least 3 weeks old and well fed. Good trade for dairy stock today making from €1,160 to €1,510. Quality in suckler ring more variable today with pairs making to €1,780. Hoggets back today by €7 to €8 per head. Cull ewes made €55 to €125.

Good size sale with over 800 on offer. The sale was held with further restrictions in place today and passed off fine and customers at all sides must be thanked for their co-operation. Trade for bullocks improved on the week, heifer trade similar and cull cows easier in line with the pull in beef quotes for cull cows at the factory. The improvement in the weather meant that there were men anxious for stock.

A sale took place on Tuesday last the 24th March at Ennis with over 1,100 head of stock on offer and which was operated under extremely tight protocols in relation to social distancing and it went very well despite the restrictions. Overall trade was pretty positive and stronger than the week previous, as men were anxious to source stock. Calves meet a strong trade today but mostly Whiteheads and Continentals available today. Pairs in the suckler ring made to €1,780. Hoggets a tougher trade and generally made €115 to €125 with a few exceptional lots making to €147. Cull ewes made €55 to €125.
