The Runner Section:
Only Stock 6 MONTHS OR UNDER will be sold in the Runner Section and they will be sold after the Calf Sale.
Calves must be at least 10 days of age before they can be sold and UNDER 6 weeks of age.

If the number drawn is above half the number of pens entered, we go up to the last pen in the draw, then start at pen 1 and up to the number drawn.
Sheep Sellers All sheep including lambs presented for sale must be identified with a full set of EID tags, i.e. one conventional tag in the sheep’s left ear and a corresponding electronic tag placed in the sheep’s right ear. All sheep moved to and from a livestock mart must also be accompanied by a newly issued dispatch document containing a barcoded document serial number.

Scariff Weanling Show & Sale

The annual weanling Show & Sale went off very well today. While the sale was smaller than 12 months previous, quality on offer was excellent with lovely store stock on offer and trade was dominated by farmers. Trade for the lighter heifers was better than the heavier heifers on a per kg basis but quality was very good. Great farmer demand for top quality charolais and limousin stock. Buyers attended from Laois, Offaly, Tipperary, Westmeath and Kildare.

Ennis Mart Tuesday 4th September 2018
Numbers slightly smaller than last week and this is because of a lot of work going on, on farms. Trade again good for quality stock but after that trade is tough and quality was variable in all rings today. Suckling pairs made to €1,680. Runners following the same trend with quality lots doing very well and heifers made to €715 and bulls to €1,000 but plainer lots of these also harder sold. Sheep numbers a bit smaller also but a bit more life in the trade and up on the week by €2 to €4 per head. Average price up 5c to 6c per kg on the week with a top price of €2.30/kg. Cull ewes made €57 to €94.

The annual Cattle Show & Sale took place in Scariff on Saturday last. A good entry of stock on offer. Trade was better than expected in the heifer section but slightly tougher in the bullock ring. Aged bullocks going out of spec meet a tough trade and again it was quality that dictated the market. Show results are as follows:

Numbers similar to last week. Trade improved by €10 to €20 per head but again it is the quality that’s attracting the interest in all rings. A small bit more activity for the light shipping type runners and weanlings. Runner heifers made to €745 and bull runners made to €980. Suckling pairs made to €1,670. Bull weanling and heifer weanlings €10 to €20 better than last week. Sheep a solid trade on the week with a larger entry, and lambs averaged just over €2/kg. A top price of €119 was achieved for a pen of lambs. Cull ewes made €55 to €100.

The annual Cattle Show & Sale in Kilrush attracted big numbers and quite a good trade overall with quite a number of dry cows on offer also and these were a mixture of Continentals and dairy culls. The quality on offer was very good with a good mix of beef and stores available in the bullock and heifer rings.

Big sale of weanlings on the day. There were quite a few weanlings in the 230 to 300kg category and these meet a very good trade with both farmers and some shipping activity for these. Farmers were very strong for the better quality lots and it was the shippers picking up the lesser lots in this weight bracket. Farmers were the active customers for the heifers and these repeated the very solid trade of the previous week.

Monday 17th September 2018
The annual Cattle Show & Sale of Bull Weanlings took place in Kilfenora Mart on Monday night and proved a great success with over 400 quality bulls on offer. Farmers are to be complimented on the quality of offer and this helped to attract buyers from many counties and this had the effect of a very high clearance rate with a large crowd around the ring even at 11pm.

Numbers slightly back on last week and this was to do with the ploughing. Trade very similar to previous weeks with quality being the dominating factor. Quality easily sold but plainer type stock finding the going tough. Runner heifers made to a tops of €700 and bull runners made to tops of €910. Small entry of suckler stock made to €1,500. A good entry of sheep today with a lot of them unfinished, and this reduced the average price per kg by 5c/kg and averaging €1.95/kg. Cull ewes made to €110 and varied from €52 up to €110.

Good increase in numbers all round but no great change in the trade, again with top quality bulls meeting a fine trade and the 2nd grade and heifers being the hardest sold overall. Quality heifers still meeting good demand. Cows and calves made to €1,800. Good entry of runners with runner heifers making to €700 and runner bulls topping out at €850. A small number of calves on offer but these meet a good trade. Lambs made to €118 and average price up by 6c/kg on the week. Cull ewes made €70 to €98.

Big sale in Scariff with some lovely quality weanlings on offer but most of these were in the 250kgs to 300kgs bracket. It was all farmer activity in the heifer ring with some export activity for the lighter average quality bull weanlings. Small entry of 1 ½ year old bullocks meet a very solid trade.
